hummingbird 2021

The twig hanging over the water is a favorite perch for birds.

This Ruby-throated Hummingbird sits on the twig to rest on her way to the Lonicera blooming nearby.

Monarchs are finding the
Joe Pye Weed and milkweed plants in the yard.
This one even found the sweet nectar in the hummingbird feeder.

travel ready

The hummingbirds have been filling up on nectar for their migration south in coming days.  This is the latest date I've seen Ruby-throated Hummingbirds still in Minnesota.  But then, the climate has allowed flowers to bloom later than usual too.

resident Hummingbirds

This year, we put a dry branch up as a perch extending from one of the feeder poles.  It is the favorite spot for the hummingbirds to sit and survey their flower garden.

Ruby

We watched this Ruby-throated Hummingbird Archilochus colubris over several days as it flew from flower to flower, taking an occasional rest on a bare tree branch high above the flower gardens at the woods' edge.

hummingbirds

With four nectar feeders at different places around the yard, we often see the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) as they make their rounds each day. This little female was sipping nectar from the 'Black and Blue' Sage (Salvia guaranitica) as we sat nearby. I often see these little flying jewels at the feeder outside my office window, as they sip and dart back into the woods.
